How to Write a New Year Letter to Your Future Self

A simple New Year ritual: write a letter to the person you will be next December, seal it, and let it arrive on its own. Includes a template and ten prompts.

The short version. Write to yourself as you will be twelve months from now. Say where you are, what you are hoping for and what you are afraid of, then seal it with a delivery date of next New Year. The value comes from the gap between what you predicted and what actually happened.

Why a New Year letter works better than a resolution

A resolution is a promise you make to yourself and then grade yourself against. A letter is a snapshot. It records who you were on the day you wrote it, which turns out to be the part you forget fastest and value most later.

Research on what psychologists call future self-continuity found that people who feel connected to their future self make steadier long-term choices. Writing directly to that person is a cheap way to build the connection.

The five-minute version

  1. Date it, and name where you are sitting as you write.
  2. Three sentences on what your life actually looks like this week.
  3. One thing you are hoping for by the time you read this.
  4. One thing you are worried about, written honestly.
  5. A question you want your future self to answer.

Ten prompts if the page stays blank

  • What did this year cost me, and what did it give back?
  • Who mattered most to me this year?
  • What am I pretending to be fine about?
  • What did I change my mind about?
  • What does an ordinary Tuesday look like right now?
  • What am I proud of that nobody else noticed?
  • What do I want to have stopped doing by next year?
  • What am I looking forward to that I might forget I wanted?
  • What would make next year feel worth it?
  • What do I want to tell myself if the year goes badly?

A template you can copy

Dear me, next New Year. It is 31 December and I am writing this at the kitchen table. This year I mostly worked on X and worried about Y. By the time you read this I hope Z has happened, and I am quietly afraid it will not. Here is my question for you: did it matter as much as it feels like it does tonight? Whatever the answer, I hope you are being kind to yourself about it.

Make sure it actually arrives

The failure mode of this ritual is a note saved in an app you stop opening. Give the letter a delivery date instead, so it arrives on the day without anyone remembering it exists. timedrop seals your letter, encrypts it on your device and delivers it on the date you choose, with photos and a voice note if you want them. Your first capsule is free.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a New Year letter to yourself be?

Five sentences is enough. The specific details of an ordinary week are what fade, so a short honest letter beats a long polished one.

When should the letter be delivered?

Next New Year is the natural choice, because you can compare two versions of the same day. Some people prefer their birthday, and longer horizons of five or ten years work well for milestone letters.

What if the year goes badly?

Write a line now for that case. A sentence of kindness from your past self is the part people say lands hardest when the year turned out difficult.
