Graduation Letter to Your Future Self: 25 Prompts and an Example

Graduation is the best day of your life to write to your future self. 25 prompts, a short example, when to open it and how teachers can run it with a whole year group.

The short version. Write it in the week you graduate, while everything is still ending and starting at once. Say who you are right now, who got you here and what you are afraid of, then set it to arrive in five or ten years, or on the day of your first reunion.

Why graduation is the right moment

Few days mark a clearer line between one version of you and the next. The friends, routines and worries of the last few years are about to scatter, and you will not remember them the way you do this week. A letter keeps them. In a 2020 study, students who exchanged letters with their future selves reported a stronger sense of connection to that future self and more concrete career planning.

When should it arrive?

  • Five years: long enough for a first job, a move or a change of plan.
  • Ten years: the classic reunion horizon, and the furthest date timedrop.it schedules.
  • Your first reunion: a nice touch if your class already has a date.
  • Your 30th birthday: a milestone most graduates are curious about.

25 prompts for a graduation letter

Who you are right now

  1. What did an ordinary day look like in your final year?
  2. Which room, bench or café will you miss most?
  3. What did you study, and how do you honestly feel about it?
  4. What grade, project or moment are you proudest of?
  5. What do you think you are good at?
  6. What song defines this year?
  7. What are you wearing to the ceremony?

The people who got you here

  1. Who are your closest friends right now?
  2. Which teacher or mentor changed something for you?
  3. Who do you want to thank and have not yet?
  4. Who do you hope you are still in touch with?
  5. What does your family think you will do next?

What comes next

  1. What is the plan, as of today?
  2. What is the plan you have not told anyone about?
  3. What are you most afraid of about the next five years?
  4. Where do you think you will be living?
  5. What would make you feel you had done well?
  6. What would you do if nobody was watching?

Questions for your future self

  1. Did you end up doing what you studied?
  2. Who surprised you?
  3. What do you wish you had enjoyed more this year?
  4. Did you keep in touch with the group?
  5. What advice would you give graduating you?
  6. Are you happy with where you are, or with who you are?
  7. What is the one thing you promised yourself on graduation day?

A short example

Dear me at 32. We graduated today. My gown was too long and Dad cried in the car park. I have a job offer I am not sure about and a plan to travel that I have not told anyone. I will miss the library steps and Friday nights with Sara and Jonas. I hope you went on the trip. I hope you still call Sara. If the job was a mistake, you were right to try it, and I hope you left in time.

Running it with a whole class

For teachers, a graduation letter fits in one lesson. Give students the prompts, twenty minutes and a template, and agree the opening date together. Use personal or parent email addresses for delivery, since school accounts usually close after students leave. The classroom time capsule guide covers consent and delivery in more detail, and the printable template gives every student the same structure.

Make sure it arrives

A letter in a drawer rarely survives five moves. Sealed as a digital letter, it arrives on the date by email, can carry a photo from the ceremony and a voice note, and stays locked until then. A free account includes two letters a year. For more to write about, see the 100 prompts in the full guide.

Frequently asked questions

What should I write in a graduation letter to my future self?

Who you are today, who helped you get here, what you plan and fear next, and a few questions for the person reading it. Specific details from graduation week are what you will value most later.

When should a graduation letter be opened?

Five or ten years later works best, or on the date of your first reunion. timedrop.it can schedule a letter up to ten years ahead.

Can a teacher do this with a whole class?

Yes, in one lesson. Use personal or parent email addresses for delivery, because school accounts are usually closed after students leave.
